Scholarships are available though the Friends of MCRPD. Be sure to summit requests early, scholarships take up to one month to process. Download the application here

* C. V. Starr Community Center/ Mendocino Coast Recreation and Park District Enrichment Class Refund Policy.If a program is canceled by the Center, the registrant will receive a credit on account or a refund check for the full amount may be requested. If a participant wishes to drop out of a class they must notify the center in person or by phone. When a refund is requested to be a credit on account there is no fee, if a participant requests a refund by check there is a $10 administrative fee deducted from the refund amount. To be eligible for a refund a participant must notify the center at least three days before the first day of the class. Refund requests made after this deadline will not be granted.

Kids Night Out

Parents take the night off and enjoy staying at home or going out on a date. Everyone can swim, just as long as they are willing to wear a life jacket or pass a swim test without a life jacket. A snack will be provided.

Sharks and Mermaid Extravaganza

Come join the fun in the pool! We’ll learn how to flip our fins and show that Mermaids and Sharks really do get along. We’ll start in the water with treasure hunts, obstacle courses and free fin time, ending with all Mermaids and Sharks beaching into the party room with more surprises to come. Must be comfortable swimming and putting your face in the water. (Mermaid tails and Shark fins provided)

Robotics, Programming & Engineering Snapology Workshop using LEGO WeDo 2.0

An introductory experience to hands-on robotics using LEGO educations WeDo which is pseudo coding using blocks. Students will build then code their blocks for robotic learning. Hardware, software and engineering processes will be covered. We can build moving robots, creatures and vehicles. We will customize to ability so no prior experience needed – just come to explore.

Robot Building Snapology Workshop using Lego

Do you think you can build the strongest and most agile robot? Will your robot win a head-to-head combat mission? Basic strategies for buildiing sturdy structures by applying beams for strength and gears for speed will be covered. Then applying the knowledge to build a robot for friendly competition. Be prepared to have fun engineering a robot and competing! No prior experience necessary.

Tai Chi Chih

Tai Chi Chih is a method of self-healing. This moving meditation consist of 20 easy-to-learn flowing movements. Benefits include improved balance, energy, concentration, immunity, and sleep; as well as reduced stress, blood pressure and arthritis symptoms. Appropriate for most ages and physical conditions. If we meet our minimum enrollment 2 days before the session, we will allow drop ins for $15 per day.

Kayak Adventures

C. V. Starr Community Center and the California Division of Boating and Waterways are happy to announce that a grant was awarded to the C. V. Starr Community Center to purchase kayak equipment and offer the opportunity to take the public on guided tours of our local rivers. We will also be offering kayak classes in the controlled environment of our leisure pool at the C. V. Starr Community Center.

Local River Trips

  • Big River  (Medium Difficulty) Big River Estuary is one of those “best of all worlds” scenarios. It’s where dense redwood forests and  fresh, lazy water, meets rocky beaches and the mighty Pacific Ocean.  You may get lucky and see river otters and harbor seals! This can be a challenging paddle, as some days you’ll need to battle the winds, but mostly you will enjoy the sunshine.  (no extra fees apply)

  • Friday Kayak Series in Leisure Pool: Basic Skills Enjoy learning basic kayaking skills in the comfort of our 85 degree pool. Practice paddling, entering and exiting your kayak, and getting used to how a kayak feels. Take it to the next level and try tipping your kayak to see what its like to fall in the water. Then challenge yourself to re-enter your boat, or just practice hanging on to the side to keep yourself afloat.  No Rolling will be allowed.  Single boats only for this activity.

Red Cross Lifeguard/ Shallow Water/ Water Park Blended Learning Class. First Aid, CPR for the Pro/ AED and Title 22

Are you 15 or older and looking for a great job or challenging career? American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the place to start! Lifeguarding puts you in an exciting position, working as part of a team to help people safely enjoy the water.

Prerequisite: Swim 300 yards continuously; tread water for 2 minutes using legs only and a timed swim test. If swimmer cannot meet these requirements, they will not be allowed to take the course. When you register, pick up a class syllabus, it will give you the link to the online portion of this class. You must register 3 days before the class starts.

Bring your swim suit, towel, pocket mask, manual, and the printed out confirmation that you have completed the online portion of the class.

CPR/First Aid/ AED Adult and Pediatric

This course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adult, children and infants. Through a combination of self-paced online learning and instructor-led classroom skill sessions you will have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate skill competency required for certification. The online portion features simulation learning, an interactive experience where participants respond to real-world emergencies in a virtual setting. The online portion must be completed prior to attending the class room session and must be taken on a Flash enabled computer with high speed internet connection.
