Jojutsu is the art of self defense using a staff. The length of the jo staff is up to the armpit. This length allows more dynamic movement compared to a bo staff, which extends above the head. The jo is the best weapon to counter the sword, and was designed for that purpose.

Practitioners study set forms and movements, learning how to properly strike and block. This foundation leads to partner work: including defense against the jo while holding a jo, defense against multiple assailants, and open-handed defense against the jo.
